Parents of Indian jailed in Spain die in Mumbai

Friday September 30, 2011 10:02:44 PM, IANS

Mumbai: The parents of Mumbai-born businessman Roshan Jamal Khan, who has been imprisoned in Spain for planning terrorist attacks in Barcelona in 2008, have died here in a span of three days, a family member said Friday.

"My father Babu Peshkar Khan, 88, passed away on Wednesday, while my mother Khatmunnisa Khan breathed her last this (Friday) afternoon," Mehboob Khan, Roshan's younger brother told IANS.

Mumbai-born Roshan, 51, was sent to jail for plotting to carry out a violent attack using explosives against the Barcelona Metro, which could have caused many casualties in January 2008.

According to Mehboob, Roshan went to Spain in September 2007 to explore business opportunities in olives.

"Olive is associated with peace. But, for Roshan, there's been no peace since he went to Spain in 2007," Mehboob said.

"My parents died waiting for a dove to fly in with an olive branch from Spain," Mehboob added.

Roshan is a father of six young children aged between nine and 18 and were being supported by his father. With his death, the responsibility is now on Mehboob.

"In May, we had appealed to the Spanish government to release my brother for a month so that he could meet his parents who have taken ill. But they said they cannot give such a permission," Mehboob said.
