New Delhi/Azamagarh:
Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi on Wednesday faced a tough
protest here over the Batla house encounter. Hundreds of
protestors chanting ‘Batla House House Encounter Ki Janch Karao’
(conduct an inquiry into the Batla House encounter) gheraoed Rahul
Gandhi near Shibli College here for nearly one hour.
Rahul was in Azamgarh on his election campaign trail. But he had
to virtually flee the site without addressing a proposed rally,
news agency RINA reported.
Protestors also burnt effigy of congress leader and shouted anti
Congress slogans. They alleged that two Jamia Millia Islamia
students from Azamgarh living in Batla House of Jamia Nagar were
killed in fake encounter by special cell of Delhi Police, RINA reported.
Following the protest, Rahul Gandhi assured the students of Shibli
Nomani Collge that he would look into the alleged fake cases of
terrorism slapped on young persons of the place, the report said.
In a bid to calm agitating crowd another Congress general
secretary Digvijay Singh said that he believed that the encounter
was fake.
“The Batla House encounter was a fake encounter. I had demanded a
judicial inquiry into the matter. However, the Prime Minister and
the Home Minister thought that it was a genuine encounter. That is
why we did not persist our demand (for an inquiry),” Digvijay
Singh said virtually putting Manmohan Singh and the then home
minister Shivraj Patil in the dock.
Meanwhile, Home Minister P. Chidambaram today said that the September 2008 Batla
House gun battle with suspected terrorists was genuine and there
was "no scope for re-opening the matter".
"The Batla House encounter was genuine; there is no scope for
reopening the matter," Chidambaram said during a briefing of the
Group of Ministers (GOM) on media here.
