70 percent Tihar inmates are undertrials

Tuesday January 31, 2012 07:59:10 PM, IANS

New Delhi: A total of 73.5 percent inmates of Tihar Jail are undergoing trial, which is much above the national average of 66.4 percent undertrials in Indian jails, an official said Tuesday.

The jail is now compiling a report of undertrial prisoners who have been granted bail but are unable to furnish sureties.

"Out of the 11,598 prisoners lodged in Tihar Jail, 8,911 inmates are undertrials, including 410 women. A total of 73.5 percent inmates of Tihar Jail are under trial," Director General (Prisons) Neeraj Kumar said at the jail's annual press conference.

The jail will compile the report of undertrials who have been granted bail on a weekly basis so that if the courts allow, the prisoner could be released on relaxation or a personal bond.

The administration is also thinking of constructing new jails to reduce overcrowding in Asia's largest prison.
