Engineering students vandalize vehicles in Gurgaon

Thursday September 06, 2012 09:58:30 PM, IANS

Gurgaon: Anguished over the death of a 19-year-old girl student due to alleged negligence, students at an engineering college here staged a violent protest Thursday in the campus, vandalizing nearly 70 vehicles, police said. No one was injured.

Students of Guru Dronacharya College of Engineering Khentawas, Farrukh Nagar, some 20 km from here alleged that the girl died because of negligence of the management.

Shitija Babbar, a student of 2nd year of computer science and resident of Palam Vihar Gurgaon died Wednesday evening. Shitija was unwell and had reportedly informed her father about her condition but she was not allowed to leave the college with her father.

After the college classes Wednesday, when Shitija was going towards her bus, she fainted near the main gate of the college, students told reporters.

"She was taken to a private hospital in Farrukh Nagar, she was referred to Gurgaon but was declared brought dead. Had there been an ambulance in the college her life could have been saved," they said.

There was a condolence prayer in the college campus. During that, students, blaming management for her death, vandalized 18 buses and nearly 50 vehicles of collage staff, said a police officer.

"We have deputed three SUV for emergency purpose. Victim was taken to hospital immediately but she could not be saved," S.K. Yadav, administrator of college told IANS.

"As per the post-mortem report (Shitija) victim died of major heart attack. Students did all that due to misunderstanding," Yadav added.

No police complaint was forwarded from any side.

There was panic and fear among students and staff for some time as one of the buses set on fire was a CNG operated but fire brigade controlled it in the time, said police.
