Hong
Kong/Athens: Thousands of Muslims in Hong Kong and the
Greek Capital Athens on Sunday rallied
against the blasphemous film that allegedly insults Islam, and briefly scuffled
with policemen outside the US consulate when they tried to deliver
a letter of protest.
In Hong Kong, the demonstrators gathered at the Chater Garden in the city
centre for a rally organised by local religious and community
groups, Xinhua reported.
Organisers said about 5,000 people took part in the protest, while
police put the figure at 3,000.
Protesters prayed in the direction of Makkah, and held up placards
condemning the film "Innocence of Muslims", deemed as an insult to
Prophet Mohammad.
They demanded that the US take action against those who made the
film. Some protesters also burned US flags made of paper.
'Protest in
Athens'
In the Greek capital Athens, about
700 protesters took part in the first demonstration held in Greece
over the film that has led to strong reactions from Muslims in
several countries in the past two weeks, Xinhua reported.
Chanting slogans such as "Allahu Akbar", and raising banners that
read "Punish mockers of our Prophet", the protesters gathered in a
central square in Athens.
Minor clashes broke out, when anti-riot police did not allow the
protesters to gather in front of the US embassy building to
prevent possible violent acts.
Demonstrators threw bottles at
police who retaliated by firing tear-gas shells to disperse the
crowd.
