Thiruvananthapuram: Various Muslim clerics and community leaders announced that Eid-ul-Fitr would be celebrated in Kerala Thursday after the moon was sighted in Kozhikode.
Supreme leader of the Indian Union Muslim League Pannakad Hyder Ali Shihab Thangal and other religious leaders made this announcement.
The state government has announced a public holiday for all educational institutions for Thursday and Friday, while for the government offices, Thursday has been declared as a restricted holiday, while it is a public holiday on Friday.
Saudi Arabia and other Gulf states are also celebrating Eid Al Fitr tomorrow on Thursday, August 08, 2013, it is announced after the new moon was sighted today.
Oman, however, has announced the first day of Eid Al Fitr will be Friday, August 9.
In other parts of India, tomorrow being 29th of Ramadan, the Edi Al Fitr day will be decided after sighting of the moon. Various moon and hilal committees have appealed to the people in India to report the moon sighting.
Muslims follow lunar calendar and the first day of the new month is decided based on moon sighting on 29th of the preceding month. If the moon is not sighted, 30 days are completed.
