India to build library for Nepali academicians

India has agreed provide NRs.4.41 crore to build a three-storied library for the Nepal Academy here.

The Indian embassy, the department of urban development and building construction and the Nepal Academy signed a memorandum of understanding under the India-Nepal Economic Cooperation Programme here Thursday for the grant.

Established in 1957, Nepal Academy is a premier national institution for promotion of languages, literature, culture, philosophy, research and development of intellectual fields by bringing together and coordinating national and international activities.

The Academy does not have a library. The new library building will provide better facilities to researchers and academicians of Nepal for research and reference of invaluable books.

Besides the library, five projects in Kathmandu district have already been completed with Indian assistance. Work is going on in 12 others at a cost of NRs.42.73 crore.

India has also gifted 31 ambulances, 26 school buses and three special medical vans to various organisations in its northern neighbour. India has also undertaken construction of a trauma centre in Kathmandu at an estimated cost of NRs.160 crore. Arrangements are being made to operationalise the centre soon.

The India-Nepal Economic Cooperation Programme has an outlay of over NRs.6,500 crore with more than 450 large and small development projects completed or currently being implemented in almost all districts of Nepal.

These projects in education, health and infrastructure sectors have been undertaken in response to local needs and in partnership with the government of Nepal.
