Ahmedabad: The Gujarat High Court Thursday granted bail to renowned cleric and Vice-President of Jamiatul Ulema, Hyderabad Maulana Abdul Qavi.
A division bench of Justice Anant S Dave and Justice Moninder Pal granted bail to Quavi on a surety of Rs 50,000 and directed him to surrender his passport. The court has also directed Quavi to appear before the Ahmedabad.
The Maulana was arrested by Crime Branch ahead of the Lok Sabha polls on allegation of taking part in anti-national activities with the aide of Pakistan-based terrorist outfits.
Maulana Qavi, the founder of Jamia Ashraf-ul-Uloom madrassa, Hyderabad, was arrested from New Delhi airport on March 24 by a Detection of Crime Branch (DCB) team.
The DCB had filed a chargesheet against Qavi last month saying that Qavi (58) allegedly took part in a proxy war with the direct or indirect support of Pakistan's Inter Services Intelligence (ISI) and also other terror outfits like Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) to avenge post-Godhra riots.
A special Prevention of Terrorism Act (POTA) court had in July 2014 rejected the bail plea of Maulana Abdul Qavi.
The DCB said Maulana Qavi was 'wanted' for the last ten years under a case of Prevention of Terrorist Activities (POTA) Act.
The Defence Counsel Mehmood Paracha however argued that the Maulana was not absconding. He also said the police never issued any warrant against him, and never tried to arrest him in the past ten years.
