New Delhi: Khudai Khidmatgar, a New Delhi based NGO Saturday - the death anniversary of Maulana Abul Kalam Azad launched from Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) a nationwide campaign to encourage people to join hands and spare time for the society.
"On February 22nd – the death anniversary of Maulana Abul Kalam Azad, who represented the finest of human values – Khudai Khidmatgar launched, from Aligarh Muslim University, a vigorous year-long campaign (kaarvaan-e insaniyat) requesting people from every walk of life, to spare time for the society", Faisal Khan, the chief architect of the campaign said.
"We wish that we all become more and more active and 'do our best' and hope for a society where peace reigns supreme and every individual's needs of 'roti, kapda aur makaan', education and healthcare are fulfilled; and avenues for realisation of optimal potential of everyone are present. We hope to meet the target of 14000 man-days by 2014 end", he added.
Faisal Khan also said that the basic philosophy of Khudai Khidmatgar is to strive to be of use to humanity, and that inevitably involves voluntary assistance – in terms of time and money, both.
"The importance of human element cannot be overstated; and that is why we emphasise that the khudai khidmatgars, first and foremost, give their valuable time to the cause of humanity", he said.
"As of now, Khudai Khidmatgar does not have a single paid employee; and, to the extent possible, we would prefer to remain that way", he said.
"Because", he added, "It is only through the involvement of the people, the twin objectives of intervention for change – and the change of personality of the agent/ activist involved – can be achieved."
"And, without changing ourselves, bringing ourselves ever more close to the most disadvantaged and the discriminated, we cannot hope to appreciate and internalise their suffering, and work for the building of a society, where the conditions and circumstances do not result in such recurrence(s)", he said.
"It is the voluntary labour – born out of the identification with the people and spirit of empathy for mankind, a manifestation of enlightened self-interest, focus on this world and awareness about the obligations of a meaningful life – that is the hallmark and the strength of Khudai Khidmatgar", he said.
"In the short span of time, since the revival of Khudai Khidmatgar, its activities have spread to new areas – in terms of nature of involvement as also the geographical location of the activity; and, therefore there is the requirement of more volunteers and more time from the volunteers", he added.
