Lucknow: The Uttar Pradesh government on Tuesday appointed 1978-batch IPS officer Rizwan Ahmad as the new Director General of Police (DGP) - the first Muslim to assume the post in the state, which recently saw the worst communal riot in its history.
Rizwan Ahmad will, however, have a short tenure as he is set to retire in February. He replaces Deo Raj Nagar who retired Tuesday.
After taking charge as the new DGP, Ahmad said the state police was capable of dealing with all the challenges.
"I will do everything to boost the morale of police, which is capable of dealing with all situations," he said.
Ahmad's name for the DGP's post was doing the rounds in the IPS circles since April when former DGP A C Sharma was on his way out. He had overseen arrangements of the iftaar party hosted by CM Akhilesh Yadav.
The Akhilesh Yadav government's image has taken severe beating first due to riots in Muzaffarnagar and recently over the condition of post-riot relief camps where 34 children have died due to the cold.
Sources in the government said the government was earlier hesitant in appointing Ahmad as DGP given that another Muslim officer, Jawed Usmani, holds the Chief Secretary's post.
A native of Ballia, Ahmad was posted as Director General, Railways, since May after he he was shifted from the post of Director General (Telecom).
