Meerut: A land disupte in a Meerut village Thursday turned into violent clashes between the two communities living one Muslim youth dead and an Imam of a local mosque injured.
According to the local police, clashes erupted in Meerut's Jaroda village on Thursday evening following a land disupte. The clashes soon took communal shape, and a Muslim youth, who is identified as Fariyad, got killed in private firing by Hindus from neighbouring village Chichoi.
The Imam who is said to be injured in the private firing is identified as Mohammed Yasin. He has been admitted in a hospital where his condition i ssaid to be stable.
Due to the involvement of two religious communities in the incident, security forces swung into action and a police team was immediately deployed in the area to prevent further violence.
"It was a case of land dispute," said SSP Omkar Singh.
"An agricultural land of Jaipal Singh, a resident of Chichoi village, was auctioned a year ago and was purchased by Arvind Gupta. However, Jaipal did not give its possession, following which Gupta sold the property to Noorjahan Begum in the neighbouring village.
"When repeated requests by Noorjahan's family to allow possession of the land did not yield results, the latter, on Thursday morning, started agricultural activity on the field.
"To teach a lesson to Noorjahan's family, around five relatives of Jaipal reached Jaroda where Noorjahan's son Fariyad was present. The five opened fire at him and when Yasin tried to save him, he, too, was injured in the shootout", the Times of India quoted SSP Omkar Singh as saying.
The situation in the village is reported to be tense and all senior officials, including SSP, SP (rural) and ADM City are stationed at the spot.
A case has been filed at Kithore police station in which 10 persons have been named. Raids are on and two platoons of the PAC have also been deployed.
