Mumbai: Even though the deadlock over a deal on the seat sharing with its alliance partner Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) continues, the Congress late in the night on Wednesday declared its first list for the October 15 Maharashtra elections.

The list having the names of 118 candidates including Chief Minister Prithviraj Chavan also has nine Muslims. Chavan will be contesting the elction from Karad in Western Maharashtra.
The Muslim candidates who have been included in the Congress first list are: Asif Shaikh Rasheed from Malegaon (Central), Anees Ahmed (Nagpur Central), Abdus Sattar (Sillod), Syed Naqeebuddin (Balapur), Shoeb Guddu (Bhiwandi), Aslam Shaikh (Mumbai, Malad-East), Arif Naseem Khan (Mumbai - Chandivali), Baba Siddiqui (Mumbai - Bandra East) and Amin Patel (Mumbai - Mumbadevi).
Many of the Muslims included in the list are sitting MLAs from the respective seats. Arif Naseem Khan and Abdus Sattar are ministers, whereas Amin Patel is Chairman of Maulana Azad Finance Corporation.
Haji Anees Ahmed whose name has also been included in the list is a former minister and one of the senior leaders of Maharashtra Congress. He lost the 2009 election because of the division of secualr votes.
Asif Shaikh Rasheed is the President of Malegaon Congress and is son of two-time Congress MLA Shaikh Rasheed. He came to limelight when he took a 300-km paidal march in May 2013 to demand reservation for Muslims.
