Hyderabad: Following a complaint lodged by a local organisation, the Hyderabad police Saturday registered a case against Zee News Limited for hurting the religious sentiments of the Muslim community by reproducing on air the Charlie Hebdo cartoons depicting Prophet Muhammad and telecasting anti-Islam programs.
In the complaint lodged at Hyderabad City police station, Dr Khayam Khan, President, Majlis Bachao Tahreek (MBT), alleged that the news channel was acting like a 'mouthpiece' of controversial French satirical weekly Charlie Hebdo.
"Zee news is continuously airing the anti-Islam propaganda. Thus hurting the religious sentiments of the Muslim community for the last few days", Dr Khayam said in his complaint.
Dr. Khayam also attached the CD containing the objectionable tv program.
A case has been registered under sections 295 - A (deliberate act to outrage religious feelings), 153 - A (promoting enmity between different groups on grounds of religion) and 153 - B (imputations, assertions prejudicial to national-integration) and 66-A ITA-2000-2008.
According to the complainant, the Zee News had aired special program on January 13, 2015 at 11:00 p.m. on Charlie Hebdo front cover. The program was repeated for next three days.
"While the French weekly has published new cartoons in its first issue after the Paris killing, by showing those pictures on its channel Zee News is resorting to unnecessary provocation thus disrespecting the Indian Muslims", Dr. Khayam said in his compliant.
The Bhavaninagar police also registered a case against Zee News on Thursday following a complaint lodged by Mohammed Irfan, a student of Islamic studies from Jamia Nizmia and a resident of Nasheman Nagar in Hyderabad.
In his complaint, Mohammed Irfan, said that the news channel and anchor Sudheer Chowdhary were well aware that the cartoon would offend religious feelings and termed this as a deliberate act to create law and order problems, likely to trigger a controversy.
"The video clip has also been uploaded on Zee News website and on Youtube. This means that they (Zee News Limited) want to continuously play with our feelings," Irfan said while talking to media.
The channel had telecast the images on January 7 and again on January 13, he added.
