Kuwait City: Indo-Kuwait Friendship Society (IKFS), a non-profit socio cultural friendship association, in a letter addressed to President Pranab Mukherji and Prime Minister Narendra Modi urged them to respect Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar and minorities and promote social justice, equality, and not to ignore voices of dissent.
Stating that it was very unfortunate to see the death of a Dalit student Rohith Vemula who studied at Hyderabad Central University, IKFS President Dr. Ghalib Al-Mashoor said,"We understand that Rohit was targeted for raising issues under the banner of Ambedkar Students Association (ASA) which fights for the rights of Dalit (formerly known as untouchable) students on the campus."
"We can’t understand why Rohith was steadily isolated by campus authorities and his appeals went largely unheard", he said.
Indo-Kuwait Friendship Society (IKFS) is a non-profit socio cultural friendship association and a strong peace arguing NGO has as patrons Dr. Kiran Bedi IPS and Alok Mehta (Former President of Press Council of India) along with Chief Patron as Former Chief Justice of Delhi High Court Rajindar Sachar.
"This incident should be described as an “institutional murder”, IKFS President said in a statement.
Stating that Rohit was troubled by the treatment given to him by the university authorities IKFS President said, “Its great concern from the words of Rohit before his suicide note “that University should supply " ropes" to rooms of all Dalit students, and at the same time, “Asking poison at the time of admission itself instead of humiliating us like this”.
"In his suicide note, Rohit expressed great pain. The letter also showed "For some people life itself is a curse. My birth is my fatal accident. I can never recover from my childhood loneliness. I am not hurt at this moment. Not sad, just empty. That is pathetic. That is why I am doing this."
Demanding to reprieve both HRD Minister Smriti Irani and Union Labour Minister Bandaru Dattatreya, who have "misguided" the nation while promoting ABVP", IKFS hoped that both of them have been under the SC/ST Act charged of abetment to suicide.
"This kind of situation is unacceptable in democracy. We should keep away all the political parties from the Universities. Both RSS and BJP are working against the interest of Dalits and Muslims", IKFS said in the statement.
"You cannot ill-treat and make discrimination against Muslims, Christians and Dalits all these years", the IKFS statement said.
