Mira Bhayandar Election Result

Mira Bhayander (Thane):
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Monday added yet another big municipal corporation to its kitty as the party registered a landslide victory in the Mira Bhayander Municipal Corporation elections held on Sunday.

BJP bagged a whopping 62 out of the 95 seats, according to the results announced by the election commission after counting of votes today.

The Shiv Sena was way behind at second position with 22 seats. This is the second big victory in the municipal polls for the BJP after a thumping win in the Panvel Municipal poll.

The Congress too came down to 10 seats as compared to 18 in the previous elections.

The BJP that was in power in the Mira Bhayander Corporation with Shiv Sena doubled its tally from 31 to 62. Shiv Sena that was also claiming to win the MBMC could manage only 22 seats.

Amidst heavy rain, the poll held on Sunday to elect the 95-member new civic body in Mira Bhayandar witnessed a voter turnout of 47 percent.

During the first half only 26 percent voters exercised their franchise, however, the number increased in the second half.

The Congress had secured one seat unopposed and hence the polls were held only for the 94 seats on Sunday. The Congress bagged the seat after the returning officer rejected the nominations of BJP and Sena candidates due to caste certificate issues.

A total of 509 candidates were contesting for the 94 seats.

While BJP is contesting the polls along with Republican Party of India (RPI) led by Union Minister of State Ramdas Athawale, Shiv Sena, Congress and NCP are contesting the polls separately.

According to IE report, the BJP contested for 90 seats while four seats had been given to RPI. Moreover, Shiv Sena had fielded candidates in all the seats, Congress in 75 and NCP in 67.

In 2012 Mira Bhayander Municipal Corporation Election, the BJP had won 29 seats and ruled the civic body for five years with support from Shiv Sena that had bagged 14 seats. Despite winning in 27 wards, the NCP remained out of power, while the Congress could grab just 19 seats. The Mira Bhayander Municipal Corporation was once considered as a Congress-NCP bastion.

The BJP-Shiv Sena combine rules the Kalyan civic body, the Sena has an upper hand in Mumbai and Thane. While the Congress retained Bhiwandi-Nizampur civic body, the NCP held on to Navi Mumbai. The BJP controls Panvel civic body and shares power in Ulhasnagar and Vasai-Virar corporations.
