Mumbai:
The Mumbai University will soon have an offshore campus in the US, Vice Chancellor Sanjay Deshmukh said here Thursday. One of the options before the varsity was to “purchase” an existing university in the US and turn it into MU’s offshore campus, he said.

"We are creating history," said Deshmukh. "A physical campus of Mumbai University in America is not far away."

During his recent visit to the country, Deshmukh held meetings with potential partners for the project, Deshmukh told reporters here.

He's either looking at buying a building on 24th Street, Manhattan or purchasing a university in Houston, Texas.

If neither works out, there's an option to set up a facility within the University of Akron in Ohio.

The objective is to create an offshore facility which will design new courses in areas of emerging interest such as international politics, leadership and life coaching.

The US campus would benefit from tie-ups with foreign partners and complement the intellectual resources of the existing Mumbai campus.Deshmukh and team looked at universities in Texas, in particular, which are on sale and offer online education.

“A direct presence in the US will help the University to form more associations and tie-ups with the institutes there. We can offer more international courses,” he said.

The University of Mumbai (known earlier as University of Bombay) is one of the oldest and premier Universities in India. It was established in 1857 consequent upon "Wood's Education Dispatch", and it is one amongst the first three Universities in India.

As a sequel to the change in the name of the city from Bombay to Mumbai, the name of the University has been changed from "University of Bombay" to "University of Mumbai", vide notification issued by the Government of Maharashtra and published in the Government Gazette dated 4th September, 1996.

The University was accorded 5 star status in 2001 & 'A' grade status in April 2012 by the National Assessment and Accreditation Council (NAAC). It has been granted University with Potential for Excellence (UPE) status by UGC and PURSE Scheme by DST.
