Lucknow: At least 10 people have been killed and more than 100 others have been injured when a boiler exploded at NTPC’s Unchahar plant in Raebareli on Wednesday, police said.
"An unfortunate accident in the boiler of 500MW under trial unit of NTPC - Unchahar occurred this afternoon", NTPC said in a statement.
The boiler pipe burst in the 500 MW power generating unit. The unit at 30-year-old NTPC plant in Unchahar began operations in March.
TV reports said a massive fire broke out and a huge ball of dust rose after the explosion, making rescue difficult.
The plant has now been shut down and a National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) team has also been sent to help in the rescue effort.
The injured are being treated at two hospitals including one within the NTPC campus. Those with the worst burn injuries are being taken to hospitals in Lucknow, around 110 km away.
Superintendent of Police (SP) Shivhari Meena told PTI that according to initial reports “50-60 persons have suffered injuries” in the explosion. He added relief and rescue operations were underway and the injured have been rushed to nearby hospitals.
UP Chief Minister, who is away in Mauritius, has announced compensation of Rs 2 lakh for the next of kin of deceased, Rs 50,000 for critically injured and Rs 25,000 for injured.
