Bhopal: Arif Aqueel and Arif Masood have won the 2018 Madhya Pradesh elections while Masarrat Shahid lost the electoral battle in Sironj. Aqueel, Masood and Masrrat are just 03 Muslim candidates fileded by the Congress party in Madhya Pradesh.

According to the final result, announced by the State Election Commission, Arif Aqueel retained the Bhopal North assembly constituency defeating Fatima Rasool Siddiqui of the Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) by more than 45,000 votes.

Arif Aqueel got a total of 90,403 votes, some 17,000 thousand more votes than 73,070 he bagged in the 2013 elections. Fatima Rassol of BJP could get just 55,546 votes. Fatima is daughter of Rasool Ahmed Siddiqui - a former Congress MLA from the same seat.

Arif Masood, another Muslim candidate in Madhya Pradesh, has won the 2018 assembly elections from Bhopal Central constituency. He got a total of 76,647 votes and defeated Surendra Nath Singh of BJP by about 16,000 votes. Singh who won the Bhopal Madhya seat in 2013 got 61,890 votes in the 2018 MP elections.

Masrrat Shahid on the other hand lost the election in Sironj-Lateri Vidhansabha seat to BJP's Umakant Sharma. Masarrat, Ex President of Madhya Pradesh Mahila Congress who was also a member of Haj Committee of India, got 48,883 votes while Sharma bagged 83,617 votes. Sironj-Lateri Vidhansabha seat was earlier held by Govardhan Lal of Congress.

Madhya Pradesh on Tuesday witnessed a thrilling election contest on the counting day. The ruling BJP and Congress both were in a tight race since start of the counting at 08:00 am Tuesday. At times, it emerged that the two parties will end with equal number of seats in the state. However, after a late night drama, Congress claimed victory in the state and wrote to governor about its intention to form government.

According to the final results announced by the election commissio, Congress won 115 seats in Madhya Pradesh - exactly equal to the halfway mark in the house having a total of 230 seats.

The ruling BJP which was contesting for a 4th consecutive win, ended with 108 seats in its pocket. Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) won just 02 seats and others won 05.
