Ramallah: Palestinian teenager Ahed Tamimi was sentenced by an Israeli military court on Wednesday to eight months in prison. Tamimi's angry altercation with an Israeli soldier outside her West Bank home made her a worldwide symbol of resistance against Israeli occupation and oppresion but quickly got her jailed without bail.
Tamimi, 17, and her mother, Nariman, 42, were sentenced to eight months in prison plus a fine of about $1,500 for each following a plea bargain that would end their trial and bring about their release in July, Tamimi's lawyer said.
Tamimi was arrested on December 15 when she was only 16 years old and charged with slapping one of the Israeli soldiers who raided her family home in Nabi Saleh village, near Ramallah. Her mother was arrested on the same day for streaming the incident live on Facebook, and therefore charged with incitement.
According to Palestinian news agency WAFA, the two Tamimis have had almost 10 court hearings since their arrest as the defense lawyer and the military persecutor were battling over the case.
Ahed Tamimi has become a household name and an icon of Palestinian resistance. A number of international human rights organizations have condemned her arrest and called for her immediate release.
