Mumbai: Widespread outrage, anger and condemnation from different quarters were reported two days after videos and photographs of brutal police action against the Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) students went viral on various social media platforms.
Messages of condemnation are received not only from different parts of the country but also from abroad. “We the (AMU) alumni residing in Bahrain are outraged by the unnecessary use of violence by the police force (as is evident by numerous videos circulating on social media) against peaceful protesters demanding the arrest of the culprits involved in brazen daylight terrorist attack on the AMU campus”, Sharique Ahmed, Gen Secretary Aligarh Muslim University Alumni Association Bahrain (AMUAAB), said in a statement.
“The attack as shown in almost all video clips is a disgrace to the police force, which ideally is expected to act independently without any political or other interference. The district administration has failed in its duty to take action against the offenders and bring them before the court to be dealt with under law”, he said.
“We strongly and unequivocally condemn the biased attitude of the police force, the supposed to be protectors of the society and demand immediate action according to the law of the land against the perpetrators/ conspirators of this unfortunate and unwarranted incident”, he added.
“We the Alumni of Bahrain once again demand stern action against the perpetrators/conspirators who are hell bent on vitiating the atmosphere of peace and harmony that otherwise normally prevails in the AMU campus”, he said.

The Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) erupted in protest after armed extremists, reportedly associated with Hindu Yuva Vahini, barged in the campus and tried to disrupt an event organized in the honor of former President of India and also ex-Vice Chancellor of AMU, Hamid Ansari on Wednesday. Police resorted to lathi charge and also used tear gas shells against the varsity students who were demanding action against the armed members of the right wing extremist organization.
A number of students, including president of AMU Students Union (AMUSU) and other office bearers, were severely injured in the police action. They are now under medical observation in the University’s Jawaharlal Nehru Medical College (JNMC).
Mahmood Madani, General Secretary of Jamiat Ulama-i-Hind also expressed concern over the tense situation prevailing in the AMU Campus since last few days. “It’s not but a conspiracy to use Jinnah’s portrait by unruly and anti-social elements for displaying gundaism inside the campus. Furthermore, police atrocities perpetuated on unarmed students is highly deplorable act”, he said.

Mahmood Madani further said that use of power by private forces will lead the country towards anarchy and subversion. “It’s a matter of deep concern that few powerful forces in the corridor of power have been patronizing these destructive elements overlooking the national interest. The image of our country among the comity of nations has suffered badly due to unfair treatment meted out to Dalits and minorities in the last few years. This kind of unfortunate incident will further erode our credibly in international arena”, he said.
Meanwhile, Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) Vice Chancellor, Professor Tariq Mansoor, along with his wife, Dr Hameeda Tariq, for the second time visited the injured students admitted in the university hospital and enquired about their treatment and health.
The Vice Chancellor also visited Bab-e-Syed where students were staging a sit in for fulfillment of various demands. Earlier, the AMU officials clarified that the students' protest at the varsity gate is not related to Muhammad Ali Jinnah’s portrait as reported by a section in the media.
“The students are protesting to press for their demand for immediate action against the Hindutva activists who barged into the campus and for judicial enquiry into incidents of lathi charge and other demands as contained in their memorandum given on May 2, 2018", the AMU said.
“The agitation of the AMU students is not related to the portrait of Muhammad Ali Jinnah”, the varsity said.
