Rs.19.69 cr cash, jewelry worth Rs.4.81 cr seized ahead of Karnataka 2018 polls

New Delhi: The Karnataka State Election Machinery and Income Tax Department have so far seized Rs.19.69 crores cash and jewelry worth Rs.4.81 crores as part of their action against misuse of money in the forthcoming Karnataka Assembly elections.

“In Karnataka, State Election Machinery and Income Tax Department have stepped up their action against misuse of money in election and for the first time, teams with statutory powers and sufficient resources in terms of manpower, vehicles etc. have been posted in each district of the state”, the Election Commission of India said.

The commission said total cash seizure as on April 30 is Rs.19.69 crores and the unexplained jewelry of value Rs.4.81 crores have been made by the Investigation Wing of Income Tax department in Karnataka after the start of the Assembly election related surveillance.

The assembly elections in Karnataka are scheduled to be held on May 12. Counting of votes will be held on May 15. Ground reports are suggesting that the ruling Congress party will retain power in the state.

To mobilize support for the BJP, Prime Minister Modi will address a number of rallies in the state starting today. Congress chief Rahul Gandhi has already addressed over a dozen rallies in Karnataka.

There is a triangular fight between Congress, BJP and another contestant being the Janata Dal (Secular). Besides them smaller parties like Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) of Arvind Kejriwal, Mahila Empowerment Party (MEP) of Dr. Nowhera Shaik are also in the fray.

Dr. Nowhera Shaikh was booked after she was caught with Rs.3.94 lakh unaccounted for cash at HAL airport on Sunday. Dr. Nowhera Shaikh, who launched her All India Mahila Empowerment Party (MEP) few months before the Karnakatak elections, had come from Tirupati in a private aircraft.

In 2013 Karnataka State Assembly Elections, the total seizure made in the entire campaign period was Rs.4.97 crore cash and Rs.3.41 crore worth of jewelry. “It has been found that the bulk of cash seized during operations in the present assembly elections was meant for distribution”, the Election Commission of India said.

“The Investigation Wing of the Income Tax Department has been doing intensive surveillance and monitoring activities in the State”, it added.
