Tabassum Hasan Kairana

Lucknow: Tabassum Hasan, wife of ex-MP Munawwar Hasan, has won the Kairana Lok Sabha seat by 49,291 votes, the State Election Commission said after counting of votes ended today afternoon.

Incidentally, Tabassum is the first and only Muslim MP elected to the current Lok Sabha. In 2014 General Elections, not a single Muslim candidate was able to win from Uttar Pradesh. The current Lok Sabha also has a lowest representation of Muslims since 1952. With the victory of Tabassum Hasan, Muslim tally in the current Lok Sabha has become 25.

Tabassum Hasan, an RLD candidate who was supported by all opposition parties, defeated Mriganka Singh of the BJP. While Tabassum got a total of 401,464 votes, Singh could poll just 352,173 votes. "Had there been no EVM glitches, the victory margin would have been bigger", a beaming Tabassum Hasan said after the result was declared.

Tabassum was first elected to Lok Sabha in 2009 on a BSP ticket, months after her husband - ex MP Munawwar Hasan, died in a car crash in Haryana.

"This is the victory of truth. I still stand by what I said, there has been a conspiracy and we do not want any future elections to be conducted on EVM machines. The path for the united opposition is clear in 2019," said RLD's Tabassum Hasan on her lead in trends of Kairana Lok Sabha by-poll.

Counting of votes in Kairana is still underway and the final result will be declared by today afternoon. The RLD however is confident of victory. “Now, there is no contest left in the bye-election. We are going to win with a huge margin in the range of 3-4 lakh votes,” RLD chief Masood Ahmad said.

Kairana hit the national headlines before the 2017 UP assembly elections after the local MP Hukum Singh raised the issue of Hindu exodus from the area. The bypoll in the seat has been necessitated following the death of Hukum Singh.

Byelection to Kairana Lok Sabha seat has been necessitated because of the death of sitting BJP MP Hukum Singh. The election saw a direct contest between the BJP and a united Opposition. While the BJP has fielded Hukum Singh's daughter Mriganka Singh, Ajit Singh-led RLD has fielded Tabassum Hasan.

Tabassum is backed by the Samajwadi Party, BSP and the Congress. Just ahead of the polls, Lok Dal candidate Kanwar Hasan retired from the contest and joined RLD, further boosting Tabassum’s chances.

Kairana had on Monday recorded a polling percentage of 54%. The Election Commision however ordered re-polling at as many as 73 booths after the opposition party leaders complained about EVM and VVPAT malfunctioning. The repolling at all 73 booths in Kairana Lok Sabha constituency passed off peacefully recording an estimated voter turn out of 61%.

In the 2014 Lok Sabha elections, BJP's Hukum Singh had won the Kairana Lok Sabha seat bagging 5,65,909 votes. Singh had defeated Nahid Hasan of the SP who got 3,29,081 votes.

Stakes are high for BJP in Kairana as the by election comes after it had lost the bypolls in Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath's Gorakhpur and Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya's Phulpur only few months ago.

Voting was held on May 28 for bye-elections to four Lok Sabha seats – Kairana, Bhandara-Gondiya, Nagaland and Palghar and also for 11 assembly seats.
