Bhubaneswar: The Election Commission of India Wednesday suspendended Mohammed Mohsin for checking Prime Minister Narendra Modi's helicopter when he was in Odisha to address an election rally.
The Election Commission of India while suspending IAS Mohammed Mohsin said he violated the norms. The 1996 batch Karnataka cadre IAS officer, Mohammed Mohsin, has not acted in conformity with the Election Commission's instructions concerning Special Protection Group or SPG protectees, an order issued by the commission.
"Checking of the prime minister's chopper, undertaken at Sambalpur, was not in accordance with the Election Commission guidelines as SPG protectees are exempt from such checking," said a senior official without elaborating.
IAS Mohammed Mohsin was deputed as a General Observer and working under the supervision of the poll panel in Odisha.
"... the Commission has considered the material available before it and prima facie finds it dereliction of duty," said the letter.
The prime minister was stated to have been held up at the place for around 15 minutes because of the sudden checking, the official said.
The Prime Minister had visited Odisha on Tuesday and addressed two rallies in Sambalpur and Bhubaneswar.
Earlier, helicopters of Odisha Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik and Union Minister Dahrmendra Pradhan were also similarly checked.
The searches came amidst the demand by the Congress to check the choppers of PM Modi and union ministers who are campaigning for the 2019 Lok Sabha elections in various parts of the country. The Congress raised the demand after it shared a video showing a "mysterious" trunk being unloaded from PM Modi's chopper last Thursday.
