Kolkata: Brahmin priests here on Monday joined the protest against the Citizenship (Amendment) Act (CAA) and the proposed National Register of Citizens (NRC) expressing concern over attempts to divide the country on religious lines by targeting a particular community.
Carrying placards and posters reading "No NRC, No CAA", around 100 priests congregated near Mahatma Gandhi's statue at Mayo Road in central part of the city under the platform 'Paschim Banga Sanatan Brahmin Trust' and raised slogans.
Stressing that peace was a pre-requisite for development, they said the enactment CAA and talks of NRC had caused violence across the nation.
Trust general secretary Sridhar Mishra said it was "unfortunate" that there were attempts to exclude a particular community by using the CAA and the NRC.
"We are concerned at attempts being made to divide our country on religious lines," Mishra said.
Narendra Modi government in Delhi has proposed to grant citizenship to "persecuted" Hindus, Sikhs, Christians, Parsis and Buddhists from Bangladesh, Pakistan and Afghanistan through the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) that became a law on December 12, 2019.
Those protesting against the law said they were not against the citizenship granted to the persecuted Hindus, Sikhs, Christians, Parsis and Buddhists from Bangladesh, Pakistan and Afghanistan, but are against the citizenship criteria based on religion.
"The BJP government in Delhi talks about "brotherhood" and "great culture of helping victims" while advocating the CAA. But, it refuses to provide any help and shelter to Tamils and Rohingyas", a critic said.
