Malegaon Corporation Resolution against CAA

Malegaon: Malegaon Municipal Corporation (MMC) Monday passed a resolution slamming Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) and seeking its immediate withdrawal.

Malegaon Municipal Corporation is probably the first local body in India which has passed the resolution against the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA).

Among the states, Kerala was the first to pass resolution against the CAA in the state assembly. Punjab assembly too passed a resolution against the controversial law.

The resolution in Malegaon Municipal Corporation (MMC) was passed with the supports from the corporators of Congress, Muttaheda Mahaz, All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) and others.

Some members of these parties came in the meeting hall sporting caps and T-shirts written with anti CAA-NRC-NPR slogans.

"The NPR seeking additional information is not acceptable to us", the protesting members said and warned the Civic Body officers against going ahead with the process.

The BJP corporators led by Sunil Gaekwad however walked out of the meeting hall announcing their support for the CAA.

The members of the Shiv Sena, which is ruling the Malegaon civic body with the Congress, too walked out of the meeting hall but without making its stance on the act unclear.

Dharna against CAA-NRC-NPR

The Congress Party, Samajwadi Party, Vinchit Bahujan Aghadi and other parties have also announced a dharna against CAA-NRC-NPR in front of Shahidon ki Yadgaar near Qedwai Road Tuesday from 05:00 pm to 10:00 pm.

Meanwhile, the local unit of Jamiat Ulema Hind is running a poster campaign against the CAA-NRC-NPR. The members of the Jamiat are pasting on the doors posters saying "hamare ghar ke darwaze NPR ke liye band hai".

Protests by political parties and different groups are regularly being held in Malegaon ever since Citizenship Amendment Bill (CAB) was passed by the Parliament on December 11, 2019.
