Gandhinagar: In a move that puts a big question mark on the independence of judiciary in India, the Gujarat High Court bench that lambasted the state government for its poor handling of COVID-19 outbreak has been replaced with a new one.
The Gujarat High Court had last Saturday slammed the state's healthcare system, especially in Ahmedabad Civil Hospital, and hit out at Health Minister Nitin Patel and Health Secretary, asking whether both knew patients were dying due to lack of ventilators at the hospital.
Taking suo motu congnisance of the matter, the Gujarat High Court bench comprising Justices JB Pardiwala and Justice Ilesh J Vora had also directed the state to take action regarding the present situation, especially at the Civil Hospital which has reported 62% of the total corona deaths in Gujarat.
The High Court directed the state government to set up on a war-footing a computerized control centre with real-time information of each facility across the state and make it accessible to everyone, including the public. It should be connected to each facility and each computer as well as to the phones.
"All government ambulances should be connected to this control centre and all complaints and grievances also be directed to it", the HC said.
The Gujarat High Court directives were hailed by the people belonging to cross section of the society. The Chief Justice of Gujarat High Court, Vikram Nath, however replaced the bench with a new one.
According to the reports, the new bench will comprise CJI Vikram Nath and Justice JB Pardiwala.
The total number of corona positive cases climbed over the the 15,000 mark in Gujarat after 376 fresh cases were added on Wednesday, taking the total to 15,205.
The major contribution came from Ahmedabad, which also crossed the 11,000-mark with 11,097. Wednesday also saw Corona claiming 23 lives in the state, taking the total death toll to 938.
