Amidst surging tension in the Middle East in the wake of the ongoing US-Israel Joint War against Iran, there are reports that the Persian State has been invited to join what is now widely known as Makkah Defence Pact.
Saudi Arabia, Pakistan and Turkiye signed a joint defence deal between the three countries on Friday August 07, 2026.
The three Islamic countries signed the deal in Masjid al Haram in Makkah al Mukarremah – the holiest city for Muslims, after Friday Prayers.
Among other things, one of the key points in the deal is the declaration that any attack on any of the three countries will be treated as the attack on the all three – in line with NATO's Article 5, as described by Turkey's Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan.
The trilateral pact, touted as “Islamic NATO”, was seen as the extension of the defence deal signed between Saudi Arabia and Pakistan, about a year ago, in September 2025.
Now, there are reports that Iran could also join the Makkah pact signed between oil-rich Saudi Arabia, nuclear armed Pakistan, and one of the NATO members with largest weapons Turkiye.
Citing Mehdi Rahimi, head of the Iranian parliament's Khaneh Mellat news agency, Lebanon based Al Mayadeen reported that Iran has been formally sent the invitation to join the Makkah Defence Deal.
Mehdi also said Iran is reviewing the invitation it has received.
"Iran has received an invitation to join the Mecca Agreement, and the matter is under review”, he said.
Mehdi also said that the countries in the region "are moving toward seeking a regional security umbrella," describing the development as "a victory for Iran, because it has been calling for this for a long time".
The claim has neither been confirmed by Iran’s Foreign Ministry nor by Saudi Arabia, Pakistan and Turkey.
The claim comes amidst the reports that countries like Qatar, Egypt and Bangladesh are also considering to join the joint defence deal now popular as Makkah Deal.
Interestingly, US President Donald Trump too has welcomed the Makkah Pact though it is widely believed that the agreement has been signed keeping in mind the threats the Islamic countries face from Israel and its expansionist agenda.
