Tiruchirapalli:
Former President A P J Abdul Kalam today called upon girl students
to adopt habit of reading which will help them acquire knowlege.
Speaking at the silver jubilee function of Cauveri College for Women
here, he said girl students should take a pledge to establish a
small library in their homes with at least 100 books and parents
should take a pledge that they would help their wards buy more and
more good books.
He
said family system could make our country most knowledge oriented
and harmonious if girl students helped illiterate and uneducated
women and made them aware of the importance of good health and
hygiene.
He
advised students to lead their life with a proper aim.
Later, participating in a Question Answer session, Dr Kalam said
caste and community conflicts could be ended by opening more quality
higher centres of learning, like engineering, medical and management
colleges.
To a
question, he said provision of adequate opportunities and seats
could end the policy of reservation in a long term.
To
another query, Dr Kalam said as the President of the country he was
unable to fulfil his dream. He said when he took over the Country's
highest Constitutional post, he was told that Rashtrapati Bhavan
consumed four MW of thermal power. He wanted to install environment
friendly solar and wind energy system. But, by the time he could
clarify the very large number of questions raised by the different
departments, his term was over, he said.
