With eyes glued to the television screen and a glass of drinks in his hands, we found Dr. Sharadkumar Dicksheet completely at ease and deeply involved into the melodies of old Hindi songs. “No matter if he has lost his voice. He can, at least, listen to some good music”, Sister Seema Wakadmane wallowed recalling, the doctor was once so good a singer that his voice was a hit on Nagpur and Alaska Radio Stations.

As soon as he was informed about the purpose of our visit, Dr. Dicksheet immediately switched off the television. Turned to us and asked, “What do you want to know from the man who is a foot away from death?” His voice was choking with emotions and his eyes were gleaming with an undefined, yet very powerful, resolve. The resolve, that has not faded despite he being at the fag end of his life.

It seems the glimpse of Mahatma Gandhi, Pandit Nehru, Abulkalam Azad, Vinoba Bhave and Frontier Gandhi Khan Abdul Gaffar Khan who used to pass by his house in Wardha when out for an evening walk has left some impact on his life. “Whatever time has left before I die, I want to utilize it for the poor disabled children”, says Dr. Dicksheet, who turned 78 on December 13 this year. Even after the accident that has left him wheelchair bound, cancer that has taken his golden voice and severe cardiac attacks that doesn’t allow his heart to function properly, he spends 10-12 hours daily inside the operation theatres and performs 70-80 surgeries without any break every day. During the last 30 years, he has performed more than 50,000 surgeries in 45 Indian cities till now.

“I found it very hard to believe people abandoning their disabled children just because they do not have enough money for a surgery”, says Dr. Dicksheet recalling his encounters with underprivileged patients during his visits to India after he migrated to US. The incident changed his whole life. Since then Dr. Dicksheet is organizing Free Plastic Surgery Camps at several cities in India with the help of local NGOs.

Dr. Dicksheet’s India Project while bringing cheers to hundreds of families, has also earned him many awards including Padmashree and has continuously kept him in the list of the nominees of Noble Prize since last many years. However, the journey to this position is filled with few uncertainties in his early life. “I wanted to be a singer and in fact cleared Sangeet Visharad at the age of 13. But after I realized there would not be much scope for a singer, I decided to give IAS exams a chance”, says Dr. Dixit. “However, what finally triumphed were the wishes of my father who wanted me to become a doctor.”

After that there was no stopping for him. He completed his MBBS from Usmaniya University, Hyderabad in 1956. Later his determinations and talent confirmed him a birth in otherwise a very difficult selection procedure for higher studies in US. Once shifted to US, he found himself very close to becoming a renowned Plastic Surgeon.

As we concluded the interaction, the legend raised one of his hands to say good-bye while lifting the remote control of his music player with the other. Hardly have we walked out of the room when we heard the melodious Lata Mangeshkar voice singing Rahe Na Rahe Hum, Mehka Karein Ge Ben Kar Kali....
