Eighth edition of Oxford Advanced Learner's Dictionary launched

Kolkata: Kirpan, niqab, kabbadi, fakir are some of the two per cent Indian words that find place in the 8th edition of Oxford Advanced Learner's Dictionary, which was launched here on February 25.

 

The latest edition has 1000 new words and meanings including citizen journalism, social bookmarking, staycation, stack it, carbon trading, malwar Xfactor, vuvu-zela among the 184,000 words, phrases and meanings, said Alison Waters, publishing manager, ELT Dictionaries department, Oxford University Press, UK. Staycation, a noun, which finds place in this edition means a holiday or vacation that one spends at or near his/her home.

 

Vuvu-zela, a long plastic instrument in the shape of a trumpet, that makes a very loud noise when one blows it and is popular with football in South Africa. The Rs 575 dictionary with a CD-ROM released by OUP and British Council is globally considered the ''gold standard'' for millions of learners of English as a foreign language.
