Panaji: In remarks that could irk his party, Congress leader and Goa Chief Minister Digamber Kamat today asked women to stay away from politics and "not fall for" the proposed quota for them in Parliament and state Assemblies.
"If womenfolk start running after politics then it will have a negative impact on the society," Kamat told a women's convention here.
Kamat's statement is contrary to the stand of the Congress-led UPA which favours 33 per cent reservation for women.
"Don't fall for 33 per cent reservation. Politics makes you mad. Women play an important role in transforming the society. We should look after our next generation," Kamat said.
Earlier, Samajwadi Party leader Mulayam Singh Yadav, who opposed the women's reservation bill, had sparked a controversy saying women getting elected through quota would invite catcalls and whistles.
Film actress Varsha Usgaonkar was also present on the dais along with Chief Minister during the convention organised by Institute Menezes Braganza museum.
The Chief Minister had recently sparked a controversy after he refused to meet a women's delegation leading to a violent protest near the Secretariat.
The women had gone to meet the Chief Minister demanding action against alleged illegal activities that were affecting the ecology of the state.
The Women's Reservation Bill, which was passed by Rajya Sabha on March 9, could be introduced in Lok Sabha due to stiff opposition from various parties, including, SP, RJD and JD(U).
