Malegaon, a town in India with more than 70% Muslim population has always been considered as a communally sensitive place. District Collector paying homage to Arun Chitte before his funeral on November 27

Weather it is the riot or terrorist attack, the victims are always the common men and the police personnel. This is what Additional Commissioner of Police (ACP) Mumbai Suresh Khopde had recently said while speaking to NT in Malegaon. His assertions proved once again when he lost his colleagues ACP Ashok Kamte and ATS Chief Hemant Karkare along with 11 other police personnel on November 26 in the worst ever terrorist attack in the country after the independence. Among the fourteen police personnel who sacrificed their lives fighting the terrorists in Mumbai is Arun Raghunath Chitte. With his death, the tragic moments that unfolded in Mumbai traveled to Veergaon, a small township in the historic Baglan Taluka. Located 10 kms from Satana in Nashik district, Veergaon is the native place of Arun Raghunath Chitte, one of the Dare-Devils, as the Chief Minister Vilasrao Deshmukh has described them while paying homage to their sacrifice.

The mood in Veergaon was somber ever since the news arrived in the village about the death of Arun, the son of the soil. Arun, the father of three juvenile daughters, was driving Sharp Shooter and Encounter Specialist Vijay Saleskar on November 26, the unfortunate Wednesday, when he became prey to the terrorist attacks along with his boss Vijay Saleskar. Veergaon came to standstill as his body reached the village on Thursday at 06:00 in the evening and cremated with full state honor after few hours.

Rajendra Bacchav, the village adhyaksh is all praise for Arun. “For thirteen years he had been there with the Mumbai Crime Branch. An expert driver, his swiftness earned him the closeness of his boss Vijay Saleskar and on his missions he always remained an integral part”, he said to NT while paying tribute to him.

“He is a martyr and we are proud of him”, Mothabhau Chitte, Arun’s elder brother could say somehow and handed his cell phone over to his brother-in-law Kailash Borse even as we were clearly hearing the howling sounds of some of the women in the background. “Arun’s application for a month’s leave was sanctioned and he was expected in the village today”, said Kailash. On December 29 last year Arun’s father had died and he had sought the leave for his father’s Shraddha Karykaram, a ritual observed a year after one’s death. Arun no doubt came in the village as scheduled with his head as high as never before. No matter if he would not be available for his father’s ritual next month on December 29. (Nashik Times)
