CPI blames Centre for Kashmir situation

Sivaganga: Blaming the Centre for the present situation in Jammu and Kashmir, CPI General Secretary A B Bardhan today said all the initiatives taken so far to win the goodwill of the people had been damaged by the "killing of innocent people" in firing by security forces.

Bardhan said the government should have taken some immediate steps, but the Cabinet Committee on Security met only last night, long after the violence erupted in the state.

"This shows that the Centre does not care about the issue," he told reporters here. "The women and children are losing faith in the security forces, he claimed, adding the Central and Jammu and Kashmir Governments should take full responsibility for the same."

He suggested Kashmir should be given full autonomy.

On the corruption charges surrounding the Commonwealth Games Organising Committee, he demanded a proper and thorough inquiry to bring out the truth.

"The CWG is concerned with India's honour and prestige. Hence there should be proper and thorough inquiry into the irregularities," Bardhan said.

On the price issue, he expressed hope now that the Government had agreed to discuss it, Parliament would function smoothly.

He welcomed the nationwide strike called by all Trade Unions, including the INTUC, to press their charter of demands including a halt to privatisation of PSUs.

Bardhan also said his party had decided not to align with either the Congress or BJP fronts in the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections due next year. The CPI leader said he had no information about Congress and the AIADMK getting closer.

But Congress had always been riding piggyback on either the DMK or the AIADMK or third front. "Now Congress in order to bargain for more seats, is riding on all the three horses," he alleged.
