Punjab to provide land for burial grounds

Thursday December 23, 2010 06:53:37 PM, IANS

Chandigarh: Punjab Chief Minister Parkash Singh Badal Thursday announced that his government will provide land for burial grounds for Christian and Muslim communities in all towns and villages of the state.

He was addressing a gathering of the Christian community at a first of its kind state-level function to mark Christmas at the Circus Ground here.

"The state government would provide land for burial ground to both these communities either from the panchayat land or in case of non-availability of such land, it would even purchase it for this social cause," he said.

Badal asked the Punjab State Minorities Commission chief Munawar Masih, who earlier presented a memorandum of demands on behalf of the Christian community to him, to immediately provide the list of towns and villages without cemeteries.

The chief minister also announced the allotment of half an acre land for the construction of a church and a community hall at Mohali town, 10 km from here.
