'happy' to appear before PAC, opposition unimpressed
Taking the
opposition head-on, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh said Monday that

appearing before parliament's Public Accounts Committee (PAC) in
connection with the 2G spectrum allocation scandal.

New Delhi: The Public
Accounts Committee (PAC) of parliament, led by senior BJP leader Murli Manohar Joshi, Thursday sought opinions and suggestions on
the 2G spectrum scam, even as the opposition continues to demand a
Joint Parliamentary Committee (JPC) to probe the issue.
A meeting of the PAC has been called on Monday to hear statements
from people on the issue.
"Taking into consideration the importance of the subject and the
nationwide interest evinced in it, the Committee has decided to
invite Memoranda containing views/suggestions from various
individuals, experts, associations, institutions, organisations
interested in the subject matter," the Lok Sabha Secretariat has
said in a notification.
Earlier, Prime Minister Manmohan Singh had offered to appear
before the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) but the opposition had
rejected it, stating they were sticking to the demand for a JPC.
The opposition, in no mood to budge rejected the offer along with
the Leader of the House and Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee's
suggestion Wednesday for a special session of parliament to
discuss the demand for JPC.
The PAC notification said the memoranda submitted to the Committee
would be treated as confidential and would form a part of the
records of the committee.
It has also offered individuals to appear before the committee but
subject to the PAC's decision.
The PAC is looking into the Comptroller and Auditor General's
report on the 2G spectrum allocation in 2008 that said it had led
to huge losses to the exchequer.
