Thiruvananthapuram: The National Investigation Agency (NIA) will probe into the foreign trips of tainted senior IPS officer Tomin J Thachankary, Union Home Secretary G K Pillai told reporters in New Delhi on Wednesday.
The frequent foreign trips of Thachankary, his alleged meetings with those wanted in terror cases and his possession of two passports would come under the purview of the probe.
The Centre’s decision to probe into the allegations against Thachankary came in the wake of a letter written by Chief Minister V S Achuthanandan to the Union Home Ministry seeking a probe against the IPS officer.
The Home Ministry had reported to the state government about information from the Intelligence Bureau quoting Bahrain Embassy sources that Thachankary had met four men with terror links during his recent trip to that country.
The IB report also said that out of this two were involved in the Kozhikode blast case. Thachankary had called on the Home Secretary and other top officers in the Union Home Department in New Delhi the other day.
Controversy is not new to Tomin Thachankary. Over the years, he has been caught up in a host of allegations, including smuggling of electronic gadgets for CPM’s Kairali TV, frequent foreign trips without government sanction, possessing more than one passport and amassing of wealth disproportionate to his known sources of income.
