Srinagar: No Friday prayers could be offered in the historic Jamia Masjid and other mosques located on main roads in the curfew bound areas in the Kashmir valley.

However, prayers were held at Hazratbal, which houses the holy relic of Prophet Muhammad, Hazrat Mehboob-ul-Aalam shrine on Kohi-e-Maran, Hazrat Syed Yaqoub Sahib Sonawar, Sheikh Dawood Batmaloo and Hazrat Sheikh Abdul Qadir Jeelani though the number of devotees was very less as compared to normal days.

The historic Jamia masjid at Nowhatta, one of the most troubled spot in the city and strong hold of moderate Hurriyat Conference (HC) chairman Mirwaiz Moulvi Omar Farooq, presently under house arrest, remained closed as nobody was allowed to enter the premises by the security forces and state police personnel.

'' We were not allowed to enter the mosque and were directed to go back,'' said Abdul Qadir Wani, a local resident.

He said no Aazan (call for prayers) was heard from the mosque.

The entire downtown and Shehar-e-Khas, where the Jamia masjid is located, remained under curfew for the past four days.

HC spokesman Shahidul Islam strongly condemned the authorities for not allowing people to offer prayers in the historic Masjid.

Reports said people were also not allowed to offer prayers in the mosques on the main roads in Srinagar and other districts where curfew remained imposed. However, Friday prayers were offered in small mosques in the interior localities.
