Mumbai: There seems to be no end to the volley of questions that the Congress led ruling alliance in Maharashtra is supposed to face during the monsoon session commencing Monday. After the charged Saffron Alliance unleashed its plan to make the going tough for the state government over rising prices, poor handling of Pune blast, the border row with neighbouring Karnataka and the SC verdict on the controversial book on Shivaji, Samajwadi Party Chief Abu Asim Azmi with an aim to take on the government has come with a list of burning issues pertaining to the Muslims.
Addressing a crowded press conference this Saturday in Mumbai, SP chief Abu Asim Azmi, who incidentally is also the party MLA from the metropolis, said that the SP would seek explanations from the state government over number of issues including it’s failure to handover land in New Mumbai for a Masjid despite full payment, lacklustre handling of Maulana Azad Corporation, communal riots in the state and the government’s lenient attitude towards Hindutva brigade involved in terrorist activities.
Stating that even after the full payment of the land in New Mumbai for construction of a Masjid, the government under pressure from the Shiv Sena, is not giving the possession, Abu Asim Azmi asks, “What prevails in the state, rule of the land or dictate of the Shiv Sena?”
According to Azmi, Islamic Overseas Association had in 2005 finalised cost of the land with CIDCO as 2.5 million rupees for constructing a Masjid in New Mumbai. However, the Chief Minister’s office took more than four years to confirm the deal. Consequently, the cost of the land increased from 2.5 million to a whopping 10.9 million rupees. The Association paid even this amount to CIDCO but when time came for possession of the land, local police on complaints by Shiv Sena stopped the Association from taking charge. Later on, Shiv Sena went to the court. But the court verdict too was against the saffron party.
Despite this, Abu Asim Azmi says, possession of the land is not given to the Association.
“I want to ask the Chief Minister, why this injustice to the Muslims. Can’t they construct their Masajid on legally purchased lands?” he moans.
Taking on the state government on Maulana Azad Corporation, he says, “On the similar lines there are other corporations in the State. These corporations not only quickly sanction loans but they are also waved off later on. But, in case of the loans given by Maulana Azad Corporation, the government’s attitude is exactly opposite”, he says.
Abu Asim Azmi also alleged that large scale irregularities and corruption have become hallmark of the Maulana Azad Corporation ever since its management is handed over to a private firm.
Accusing the government of indulging in ‘mere propaganda’, he says, “The government had announced to establish Urdu Ghar at some places in the state. But far from being actually implemented, the entire project is gathering dust in Mantralaya.”
Taking the government to task on its failure to check the communal forces, he says, “It has now come to the fore that the communal violence in Sangli and Meeraj was staged. Evidences after evidences emerge every day showing the involvement of Hindutva organisations in terrorist activities. Still, the government does not show slightest desire to check or ban these organisations.”
