NGO seeks ban on cloning of farm animals
Thursday, July 08, 2010 07:52:02 PM, Agencies
New Delhi: Animal rights organisation Humane Society International Thursday appealed to the government to prohibit the genetic engineering and cloning of farm animals for increasing egg, meat, or milk production.
In a letter to the Department of Biotechnology in the Ministry, NGO Humane Society International raised the concerns about animal welfare referring to their another letter written to the Genetic Engineering Approval Committee (GEAC), the apex committee under Ministry of Environment and Forests (MoEF) for approval of genetically-modified organisms and products thereof.
''Farm animals now have their genomes modified (genetically engineered) or copied (cloned) to propagate certain traits useful to agribusiness, such as meat yield or feed conversion and this could have serious adverse effects on their welfare,'' the letter stated.
The organisation claimed that the guidelines on the Regulation of Scientific Experiments on Animals issued by the Committee for the Purpose of Control and Supervision of Experiments on Animals (CPCSEA) did not cover experimentation on animals in agricultural production.
''The Department is requested to prohibit the genetic engineering and cloning of farm animals for the purpose of increasing egg, meat or milk production and issue directions to the CPCSEA to prohibit any experimental protocol regarding this subject,'' the letter added.
