Mumbai: The Maharashtra government will move the Supreme Court challenging the reduction of sentences from death to life term for six of the eight accused involved in the 2006 gruesome massacre of a Dalit family at Khairlanji village in Bhandara district of Maharashtra.
State Health Minister Suresh Shetty made this announcement in the Legislative Council here today, while replying to a question raised by NCP Member Ram Pandangle. He said the High Court's order would send a wrong signal to the society at large, hence the state must file an appeal in the Supreme Court.
Shetty said the state had not received the copy of the High Court's order yet, but it had applied for a copy immediately after the court delivered its judgement.
He said once they get the copy of the High Court's order, they would file an appeal in the apex court praying to set aside the High Court's order and confirmed the death sentence awarded to the six accused by the trial court in 2008.
