Bangalore: Janata Dal (Secular) will urge Karnataka Governor H R Bharadwaj not to give ascent to the Karnataka Prevention of Slaughter and Preservation of Cattle Bill passed in the Legislative Council yesterday, JD (S) supremo H D Deve Gowda said today.
Alleging that the Bill, which was earlier passed in the Legislative Assembly, was passed in the Council without giving room for discussion, Gowda said he would be meeting the Governor in the evening and submit a memorandum appealing not to give his approval to the Bill as it was passed in a hurried manner despite widespread protest against the Bill by intellectuals.
Gowda said JD (S) would launch state-wide agitation to create awareness among the farmers as how the Bill affects them.
Since there was no proper facility and there would be additional financial burden on the farmers to look after their cattle, the Bill if enacted would have severe impact on economic condition of the farmers, he claimed.
He said according to national statistics 77 per cent of the farmers were holding below one acre of land.
Gowda said, ''The agitation would be a non-political one and all sections of the society, NGOs and intellectuals would be invited to join it."
''Even we are ready to join hands with Congress in this regard,'' he added.
