Mumbai: Maharashtra police would soon get formal training in investigations and forensic sciences in their own university proposed in the state.

The state Home Department has proposed the Centre to set up a Police University, the first-of-its-kind in the country, to train police in various areas of investigations, a senior official said.

"The Centre has approved the idea and promised to give 90 per cent aid to the University," Principal Secretary, Home Department P K Jain told PTI.

The police can get advanced training in investigation techniques, forensic sciences, use of modern equipment and communication with citizens, Jain said.

The common public and students can also learn the topics from the University to get acquainted with the working of police force.

"We are currently considering opinions from police force about courses to be introduced, authorities to manage it and the university's location," he said.
