New Delhi: Even as the Women's Reservation Bill could not be taken up in the Rajya Sabha today, President Pratibha Patil said it would be "graceful if the Bill is passed as far as possible by consultations and consensus".
Sending out a strong message that reservation for women was necessary and desirable, the President said, "Initially, there might not be enough women in the fray. They might also bring in their relatives to contest. But these are initial teething problems."
"It would be graceful if the Bill is passed as far as possible by consultations and consensus," she said, speaking at an informal interaction with members of the Indian Women's Press Corps at the Rashtrapati Bhawan.
The Bill that seeks to provide for reservation for women in the Lok Sabha and the state Assemblies has been in hibernation for past 13 years as several parties like the Samajwadi Party, Rashtriya Janata Dal, Janata Dal (U) and the BSP have been vociferously opposed to it.
It was to be taken up for discussion in the Rajya Sabha today but had to be put off as members of these parties again forced adjournment of the House several times.
The President said she was not disappointed with development and expressed the hope that this Bill will get passed eventually.
