Lucknow: After the Sandesh Yatras launched by Congress general secretary Rahul Gandhi on April 14, the party is now organising a one year campaign 'Saajhi Virasat-Saajhi Shahadat' to mark the 125 years of the party.
All India Congress Committee (AICC) secretary and party in-charge of UP Avinash Pandey at a news conference here today said the campaign would be a massive exercise in commemorating the composite 'Hindu-Muslim-Sikh' legacy of martyrdom, unity, communal harmony and patriotism in UP, and will cover commemoration of events from 1857 to 1947.
The campaign will carry the message of party president Sonia Gandhi of 'Ateet Ke Neev Par Bhavishya Ka Nirmaan' (Building future on the foundation of past), he added. The campaign will start from Bareilly on May 31 and will end on May 10, 2011 in Lucknow by holding Swabhiman Diwas. During this one year campaign more than 55 programmes would be held in different parts of the state.
The AICC and Uttar Pradesh Congress Committee have given the party's Anti-Communal Front the responsibility of organising the campaign in the state, he said, adding Front chief Amaresh Misra would spearhead the campaign.
Claiming that such a move is being undertaken for the first time in the history of the state by the party, Pandey said the campaign will recall the heroism of'' our ancestors and give a new meaning to the word secularism and patriotism.''
''The youth of UP will be mobilised in an unprecedented way and veteran Congressmen, women freedom fighters will get due recognition in the state,'' he said.
During the campaign, the party will highlight that out of 10 million Indians who lost their lives during the 1857 war, around 50 lakh people belonged to UP while 25 lakh were from Avadh alone.
The AICC secretary said a demand of apology and compensation from Britain will be raised during the campaign. The need to establish a memorial to the composite legacy of Indian martyrs at the Lucknow Residency will also be stressed.
