44 deemed universities facing closure get breather

New Delhi: The Supreme Court Monday gave six weeks time to an expert panel to study the replies of 44 deemed universities facing de-recognition due to deficiencies in their institutions.

The three-member panel is likely to be reconstituted soon as one of its member withdrew from it.

The apex court bench of Justice Dalveer Bhandari and Justice Deepak Verma gave the committee six weeks to go into the responses by 44 deemed universities facing de-recognition on the recommendation of Professor P.N. Tandon Committee.

The court said that an unwilling member of the panel could not be compelled to be on the committee and directed its reconstitution.

The judges said that the human resource development ministry would go through the findings of the expert committee and make recommendation on the future of these institutions. The ministry will get four weeks to act on the panel's report.

The expert committee will go through the responses that these 44 deemed universities have individually given to the notices issued to them by the ministry.

On Jan 11, the apex court directed the central government to issue individual notice to each of the 44 deemed universities drawing attention to the deficiencies in their institutions and calling for explanations.
