Kolkata: Subhranshu
Roy, the son of union Minister of State for Shipping Mukul Roy and a
Trinamool Congress candidate in the assembly polls, was Sunday
arrested from an election meeting in West Bengal for allegedly
assaulting poll officials, police said.
The rally was addressed by Trinamool chief and union Railway
Minister Mamata Banerjee.
"He has been picked up from the Naihati area. After Banerjee left
and the meeting was over, we picked him up. Right now he is in
police custody," sub-divisional police officer Ajay Kumar Thakur
told IANS.
North 24 Parganas police Superintendent Rahul Srivastav told IANS:
"He was arrested from the venue of Banerjee's meeting. The Trinamool
supporters tried to forcibly prevent the police from arresting him."
Roy has been charged with instigating a mob that attacked Election
Commission officials in Boldeghata area of Bijpur assembly
constituency Tuesday. An arrest warrant was issued against Roy.
Roy is fighting elections from Bijpur assembly seat in North 24
Parganas district.
Raids were being conducted over the past two days for arresting Roy,
with West Bengal Chief Electoral officer Sushil Gupta himself
monitoring the developments.
Apart from Roy, 12 people have been arrested, and a police officer,
Partha Pritam Roy, suspended for not arresting the accused, who was
present in his police station after the crime.
Hours earlier, state's ruling Left Front demanded the candidate's
immediate arrest.
"I would like to impress upon the Election Commission and th state
administration that he be taken into custody immediately," Left
Front chairman Biman Bose told mediapersons here.
