New Delhi: The Rajya Sabha
Thursday passed a motion to impeach Justice Soumitra Sen of the
Calcutta High Court by a majority of 172 votes. Of the 207 members
present in the house, 189 voted in favour of the motion, while 17
voted against it. One MP abstained.
This is the first time the Rajya Sabha has passed an impeachment
motion.
The controversial judge was found guilty by a special committee
constituted by Rajya Sabha chairman Hamid Ansari. The committee
found charges of financial irregularities against Justice Sen to
be correct. He is accused of misappropriating around Rs.24 lakh in
the 1990s when he was a lawyer and appointed receiver by the
Calcutta High Court.
