Lok Sabha to sit Saturday, may discuss Lokpal

New Delhi: Lok Sabha Speaker Meira Kumar Saturday said the discussions on the Lokpal issue will take place initially for seven hours and if required could be extended.

The clarification came after Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee had initiated a debate on the Lokpal bill and leaders like Sharad Yadav of the Janata Dal (United) and others demanded more time to discuss this critical issue so that the voice of all parties can be heard.

Mukherjee said the world's largest functional democracy was at the crossroads and urged the Lok Sabha to "dispassionately" discuss the Lokpal bill issue and arrive at a strong anti-graft law keeping in mind its "constitutionality, practicability and implementability".

The house is expected to pass a resolution on the Lokpal bill Saturday evening.
