Prof. Malik delivered the U.C. Chaturvedi Oration Lecture on the
emerging problem of fungal infection in patients suffering from
Bronchogenic Carcinoma (lung cancer).
She observeed that the cases
of lung cancer are on the rise and they are more prone to get
infection with Aspergillus. She studied 59 cases of lung cancer
and found that there is frequent association between lung cancer
and super imposed fungal infection (aspergillosis). This
significant finding is quite alarming and if timely treated with
antifungal drugs there is improved outcome.
She emphasized the
role of ELISA and PCR for early detection of Aspergillosis in
cases of Carcinoma of lung and suggested early screening of lung
cancer patients for this fungal infection. Very little work has
been done in the world over this problem, she said.
Prof. Abida Malik was awarded with a citation, shawl and a gold
medal by the Director of Institute of Medical Sciences, Banaras
Hindu University.
The conference was attended by more
than 150 microbiologists from India and abroad.
