Deoband
(Uttar Pradesh):
Darul Uloom Deoband shura has ruled that Ghulam Mohammad Vastanvi
will continue as vice chancellor of Darul Uloom Deoband till a
three-member subcommittee of clerics constituted Wednesday takes a
final call on him. The Shura has also decided to clip his wings by
appointing an acting rector.
The decision was taken by the Majlis-e-Shoora, the seminary's
highest decision making body, which set up the subcomittee.
"The Shura that met today at Darul
Uloom ruled that Maulana Vastanvi will remain as the Rector of Darul
Uloom Deoband for the time till the subcommittee submits its
report", said the spokesman of the Darul Uloom after the
meeting.
"Darul Uloom will have an acting
rector during this time", he added.
"While Maulana Abul Qasim Banarsi
has been chosen as acting rector, the 3-member enquiry committee
includes Mufti Manzoor Ahmed of Saharanpur, Maulana Ibrahim Malik
of Tamil Nadu and Mufti Ismail Qasmi of Maharashtra", he said.
Mufti Ismail Qasmi, who is also
member of Maharashtra Legislative Assembly will be the convener of
the committee.
"While no timeframe has been fixed for the subcommittee to submit
its report, it has been asked to complete the task as early as
possible," he said.
Maulana Vanstanvi was elected as
Rector of Darul Uloom Deoband after the death of Maulana Marghubul
Hasan few months ago. He, however, invited trouble when his
controversial statement praising Gujarat Chief Minister Narendra
Modi appeared in the media.
Following the storm over Maulana
Vastanvi's reported statment, Darul Deoband also witnessed clashes
between those in favour of and against the new rector.
Bowing to immense pressure, Maulana
Ghulam Mohammad Vastnavi finally had decided to quit and today's
meeting was called to decide on his fate.
